A 14 000 km long submarine fibre optic cable known as the West Africa Cable System (WACS) has landed for the first time on Namibian shores.  The cable will enable Namibia to improve communications and Internet services that are crucial for socioeconomic development. According to a Southern Times article, the cable is also expected to be laid in South Africa, Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo Brazzaville, Cameroon, Nigeria, Togo, Ghana, Cote d Ivoire, Cape Verde as well as the Canary Islands, Portugal and the United Kingdom.
